Each month we highlight a place of interest around the globe that we consider as unique as Borgo di Vagli. The tips are selected as they either show respect for the environment, nature, and architectural beauty or are deeply indigenous to their individual origin. This month we have chosen to highlight Il Museo Diocesano di Cortona.
Il Museo Diocesano di Cortona
As is often the case, you invariably only visit places of interest that are on your “doorstep” when friends or family come to visit you. You know it’s there, waiting for you, but you think you can visit whenever you like, as there are more urgent thinks to visit or explore further afield.
This is the case of the small - but with HUGE in importance - Diocesan Museum, right in the centre of Cortona, only 20 minutes drive from Vagli.
It houses some of the most important works from the major painters of the Renaissance, which were originally displayed on the walls of some of the Churches of the Diocesi.
Amongst them, the splendid Fra Angelico “Annunciation”, by Cortona’s Luca Signorelli “Communion of the Apostles” and Pietro Lorenzetti’s “Maestà”.
To be able to see works of the same quality or Artistic value, you should drive as far as Arezzo or in the neighbouring Città di Castello, or to the iconic Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria (which is another must see Museum, second to none).
When next in Cortona, then, don’t miss it; you will wonder why you didn’t visit it before…!!!
